BBM for Android, iOS now here

  • Paul Omorogbe & Seyi Sokoya
  • A fortnight ago we had written that BlackBerry Messenger would be available on multi-platforms, namely Android and iOS, the operating system that runs the iPhone and iPad.
We are glad to announce that BlackBerry confirmed on Wednesday that its messenger service would come to Android and iOS this weekend. To be specific, the Android version was launched on Saturday, while the iOS version hits the App Store today.
BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) was previously exclusive to BlackBerry users, and is much loved by the BlackBerry faithful worldwide. However, Nigerians seem to love it most judging by how fast BlackBerry became the craze among the populace and has continued to be up till now.

But with the announcement and eventual launch of BBM for Android and iOS, it calls to question how long the dominance or popularity of BlackBerry phone will continue in the Nigerian market, basically because BBM and the ability to ‘ping’ contacts has been the most fascinating and perhaps the only unique selling point that drove Nigerians in hordes into owning one over the last four years or thereabout. Time will tell if the proliferation of BBM to affordable Android phones and more will put paid to BlackBerry’s dominance.

One thing that has not changed and that will work in favour of BlackBerry is the affordable internet access the platform enjoys from telecom operators presently.
By expanding it across platforms, the manufacturers BlackBerry is looking to take over the likes of WhatsApp,
which has garnered more than 300 million users.
BlackBerry has attempted to rebrand BBM as more than a messaging service, positioning it as more of a social network.
BBM gives you a private social network for active, real conversations. BBM has proven to be a convenient means of communication because it is always on so you are always connected; user don’t have to login. It  tells when messages are delivered and read. It also uses a PIN so you don’t have to give anyone your phone number or email address, bringing in some level of privacy.
BlackBerry provides a link for downloading BBM on your phone on its website.
Meanwhile, Samsung is planning to launch its Android-based BlackBerry Messenger app in Africa this week.
The company reportedly confirmed the news on Monday, saying that its customers in Africa will have access to BBM via the Samsung Messaging Hub on Friday.
According to ZDNet, which earlier reported  the news, it’s possible that Samsung will have exclusive access to BBM in Africa for a period of three months.
Samsung and BlackBerry announced in August that they had formed a partnership that will see the popular messaging application make its way to Galaxy phones.
BBM is extremely popular in Africa, making it a smart move on Samsung’s part to launch the feature in that market.
